The picture book VAAL tells the story of a little boy who wants to know the secret behind his father’s mysterious cement mixing truck. The story investigates the contemporary phenomenon of urban shamanism and the age-old problem with curiosity. (The title VAAL was inspired by a minor deity in a Star Trek episode.)

Johanna Thompson

Johanna Thompson studied New Genres at the San Francisco Art Institute. Her practice ranges from sound and performance to drawing and writing. She is one half of the art collective Umbra et Lux and co-author of the publication notes from the underground.

Adam Sinykin

Adam Sinykin has published illustrated books for children and adults. He is also the co-author of a two volume historical atlas of Shanghai’s old city. For two decades he has worked as a screenwriter, having created scenarios for film and television. Mr. Sinykin currently divides his time between Shanghai, Los Angeles and Bologna.
