Chinese Weave is a photography book by Regine Steenbock, an artist and fashion designer who engages in research. We follow her gaze on a country that in the so-called West is permanently present as a myth, a politically dubious player, and an economic threat. At the same time, China seems unfamiliar and difficult to decipher. In around 350 pictures, aspects of the textile culture and business world are shown, just as they are found in everyday life.
For thirteen months, Regine Steenbock wandered her way through textile mass production for the world market in the Pearl River delta and discovered, in startingly coexistence, the highly elaborated traditional textile culture and contemporary fashion of the Miao and other Chinese minority groups 1300 kilometers inward in Guizhou. Mythological treatment of the past encounters a hopeful faith in progress; politics controlled from afar encounters local anarchy.
Organized in thematic chapters, this publication presents the essence of an extensive archive of visual material created between 2016 and 2018, complemented by commentaries expanding the specific contexts. The e-book also includes twelve brief videos.
Regine Steenbock
Regine Steenbock is an artist and fashion designer and as such oscillates between free and applied art, between artistic research and design (film, fashion, photography). In all her areas of activity, she is concerned with capturing the »conditio humana« (human condition) as it is reflected in everyday life. In 2001, she founded her fashion label Sium (sium.net/) with which she ran her own shops in Hamburg and Berlin until 2015. Inspired by her teaching activities in non-European cultural circles (most recently from 2016–18 at Beijing Normal University in Zhuhai, China), Regine Steenbock has been involved in ethnological fashion research as an artist and fashion designer since 2016 (sium.net/landsoutside). Chinese Weave was on show as an exhibition at Galerie M29 in Cologne in autumn 2019. Regine Steenbock lives and works mainly in Hamburg.
