Eine flexible Frau (The Drifter, 2010) is Tatjana Turanskyj’s acclaimed film about precarious working conditions, self-promotion demands in the creative world of work and feminist aberrations in postmodern capitalism. With this publication, the script of the first part of the Frauen und Arbeit (women and work) trilogy is available as a text: The film script is on the one hand material and a basis for work and at the same time an independent form.
Cultural scientist Angela McRobbie, who has been following Turanskyj’s work for a long time, introduces the material. The script is supplemented by preparatory material for the shoot from the filmmaker’s estate and by unpublished film clips.
“The first inspiration for my film was Richard Sennet’s book ‘The Corrosion of Character’. Sennet describes the harsh demands of postmodern capitalism on the individual. […] The more affirmative female characters – the City of Women – are contrasted by my heroine. She is a critic and doubter who tries in vain to adapt to the circumstances without losing her autonomy and dignity. But it is made clear to her that this can no longer be done – the price of adaptation would be the abandonment of her critical attitude towards the world.” Tatjana Turanskyj
The publication is published as a memorial and a call to “carry on” (weitermachen*) on the first anniversary of Tatjana Turanskyj’s death on 18 September 2022.
Jan Ahlrichs
Jan Ahlrichs founded turanskyj&ahlrichs GbR together with Tatjana Turanskyj. There he was responsible for finances and contracts. As a life partner, he was involved in every step of the production, from the development of the material to the shooting and editing.
Tatjana Turanskyj
During and after studying sociology, literature and media studies in Frankfurt on the Main, Tatjana Turanskyj was a performer with Einar Schleef in Frankfurt on the Main and Berlin. After her studies, she first worked as a copywriter and author. In 2000 she founded the OK Girls Gallery with Saskia Draxler, where Peaches and Gonzales, among others, made one of their first appearances. In 2000, she began an artistic career and co-founded the performance film collective hangover ltd* with projects at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and various film projects.
Since 2008, co-owner of turanskyj&ahlrichs medienproduktion, which aims to strengthen modern contemporary auteur cinema. Turanskyj’s films have been shown at international festivals and in exhibition contexts (e. g. Berlinale, Gothenburg, Rio de Janeiro, Cannes/ACID), they have won awards and have been evaluated in cinemas.
Tatjana Turanskyj also taught at various universities, most recently as a professor of film at the Hochschule für Gestaltung, Offenbach, she gave lectures at conferences on gender & film and was co-founder of Pro Quote Regie/Film, an organisation that successfully campaigns for equality and diversity in the film and media sector.
She died in Berlin on 18 September 2021 after a serious illness.
Janine Sack (Ed.)
As a publisher, lecturer and art director, Janine Sack is interested in the different media possibilities of presenting and contextualising the respective topics.
She conceives and designs all forms of publications: e-books, books, websites as well as magazines and newspapers (most recently redesign of the “taz”, 2017; from 2008–2012 the weekly newspaper “der Freitag”).
She is part of the journalistic network Drucken Heften Laden, which publishes the quarterly newsletter Paper News in addition to joint trade fair participations and a series of events.
Until 2009, she worked as a visual artist with a special focus on the relationship of the subject to its media representation. She co-founded the artist groups frauen•und•technik and -Innen and is currently part of the feminist network #PurpleNoise.
