Economic Words
Anke Becker
Since 2012, the artist Anke Becker has been creating Economic Words at regular intervals: Using a black felt-tip pen, she crosses out words and sentences from articles in the Financial Times, leaving only a few words visible. Previously hidden information is revealed – beyond capital flows, stock market listings, and international money flows.
Economic Words is availavle as an e-book from EECLECTIC.
Basement Berlin presents a collection of works by Anke Becker, Matthias Beckmann, Birgit Cauer, Jörg Dedering, Felix Deiters, Ulrike Dornis, Katia Fouquet, Sophia Pompéry, Laura Rammo, Hans Zeidler, and Juliane Zelwies. The group exhibition, curated by Oliver Möst, runs until 13 September 2025, and explores the perception of art as labor – with a look back at art history, politics, and pop culture.
The statement that art is beautiful but also hurts refers not only to the emotional content of artworks but also to the conditions under which art is created. The intersection between art as a technical craft and as playful expression and inspiration has been discussed for centuries, and the tension intensified in the 19th century: “The Romantics emphasized the freedom of art, but Modernism, with its market mechanisms, showed that artists had long been part of economic structures.” Preparation, implementation, mediation, project management, acquisition, public relations, professional development, administration, social media, accounting, competition for funding and resources—this is what artistic work looks like today. Often invisible, often unpaid. The group exhibition explores these issues and seeks new narratives regarding the perspective of working artists.
